SMOKING ASHTRAY. Anthropomorphic ashtray representing a caricatured head of the singer of "BARBER SHOP QUARTET". Polychrome porcelain bearing the title of a song "By the light of the silvery moon". Japanese production of the years 1945/50. Part of a set of 4, with variations. The BARBER SHOP QUARTET was born at the beginning of 1900 in American hairdressing salons, where customers used to sing "a capella" while waiting for their turn. This genre gave rise to contests and festivals, and is still in vogue today in the United States. In France the genre was represented by the "Frères Jacques" Height: 13,5cm. Smoke escapes through the ears.
