SAINT-SEBASTIAN in tuff stone. Ep. Middle of the 16th centur - Lot 52
SAINT-SEBASTIAN in tuff stone. Ep. Middle of the 16th century. H.84 P.25 L.29. This sculpture represents the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, condemned by the emperor Diocletian to be pierced by arrows. Sculpted in tufa stone, it was probably made between Anjou and Touraine, the extraction areas of this limestone which marks the identity of the architectural and sculptural productions of the Loire Valley. Marked in its composition and its theme by the influence of the masterpieces of the late Gothic period, our sculpture is distinguished by its exacerbated expressionism, its fine anatomy, its elongated, almost stretched barrel, and its development in space delicately turning on itself which places the creation of the work in relation to the arrival of the Mannerist current in France around 1540. Most of these works have been destroyed and there are few testimonies of this art in France.
