Rare couple of ancestors called tau tau in Toraja language. tau =man tau-tau =man sculpture. These effigies were displayed on terraced balconies at the entrance of tombs carved into the rock of the cliffs. The tau tau are used to honor the dead. The spirit of the deceased is embodied in the statues. They are considered as the guardians and protectors of life, maintaining the continuity between the two worlds. According to specialists, the origin of this practice dates back to the 19th century. It is rare to find couples carved by the same hand. The style is powerful and has a great presence. The eyes are encrusted with a material with phosphorescent properties.
