TOURNIER Nicolas (1590-1639). (After). FANCAISE SCHOOL 18th- - Lot 29
TOURNIER Nicolas (1590-1639). (After). FANCAISE SCHOOL 18th-19th century. "Joyeuse compagnie". Oil on canvas mounted on panel. These scenes of merry company, inspired by the works of Caravaggio, often incorporate figures with accessories, such as magnifying glasses or musical instruments, to accentuate the theatrical character of the scenes. The magnifying glass in particular represents an interesting symbolic motif, associated with sensory pleasures. The expressive gestures of the central figure, dressed in red and looking at the world through his magnifying glass, may also reflect a certain self-mockery or criticism of ephemeral pleasures. 61x91. With frame (slight damage) 92X122. The original of this work, measuring 125.5x170.5 cm, is on display at the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts.
