Engraved marble votive stone. China, Qing dynasty, circa 185 - Lot 402
Engraved marble votive stone. China, Qing dynasty, circa 1850. 33.5x34cm. The general meaning of the text is that of a moral and votive eulogy. The heart of the text expresses gratitude and Confucian values: loyalty, righteousness, respect, piety, filiality. The mention of the gods Man and Mo directly links the plaque to Hong Kong's Man Mo Temple, an emblematic place of veneration for scholars and civil servants. A translation of the text is available. Objects, most of them "literati", from the former Yelena X... collection, resident in Hong Kong before the Second World War.
