BI CHINESE DISK in antique jade. Late Neolithic period, or m - Lot 410
BI CHINESE DISK in antique jade. Late Neolithic period, or more recent (Qing period, 18th century, 19th century). Diameter: 15 cm. The Bi disk is the most emblematic ritual object of archaic China, symbolizing heaven and communication between the world of the living and that of the ancestors. It accompanies the deceased as a spiritual offering. The finely regularized, non-mechanical rim and central, oblique-walled piercing seem to testify to manual work with abrasive and bamboo rod, a process typical of Neolithic Bi and rituals. The satin-finish texture, without excessive shine, indicates slow, ancient polishing. Objects, most of them "literate", from the former Yelena X... collection, resident in Hong Kong before the Second World War.
