Antoine Augustin Cournot, Traité de l'Enchainement des Idées - Lot 133
Antoine Augustin Cournot, Traité de l'Enchainement des Idées Fondamentales dans les Sciences et dans l'Histoire. Paris, Hachette, 1861. 2 volumes in 1 vol. in-8 of (4)-IX-(3)-503 pp. ; (4)-484 pp., cardboard, black title piece, covers preserved (modern binding). First edition. Fundamental treatise by the French mathematician, economist and philosopher, Antoine Augustin Cournot in which he researches the methods to be followed in the study of science. A specialist in the calculation of probabilities, he formulates a probabilistic and relativistic conception of knowledge; without denying the notion of order in nature and history, it gives an important place to chance, defined as the intersection of independent causal series, and proposes a classification of sciences that insists on their irreducibility. Little known during his lifetime, Antoine Augustin Cournot (1801-1877) first published works on economics, including the Recherches sur les principes mathématiques des la théorie des richesses (1838), which made him a precursor of the mathematical school of Léon Walras. False title restored in volume II. Stamped "Library of the Legislature, reformed volume". Einaudi, I, 1367.
