(Claude Duthuit n° 22) 43.5 x 33.5cm. Jazz is undoubtedly Matisse's most important illustrated book and his most accomplished painter's book, the artist having revolutionized the technique. He began using cut-out gouaches in 1938, and masterfully succeeded in bringing out form and color simultaneously by cutting them out. As both author and illustrator, the brightly colored plates respond to Matisse's calligraphic reflections in perfect harmony. The moving, rhythmic illustrations evoke the tempo of a jazz orchestra or music hall, as well as faraway legends and travel souvenirs. Edmond Vairel took charge of transcribing the paper cut-outs and collages into plates and stencils, and coloring them in vibrant colors. The book was an immediate success, thanks to the tenacity of two men, Matisse and Tériade, the art critic who became his friend, who convinced him to go ahead and produce "a manuscript of modern paintings, the most beautiful book ever made on color".
