Original edition. Dubuat-Nançay (1732-1787), diplomat and historian, is seen today as one of Cantillon's disciples because of his views on the standard of living and luxury treatment. He differs from Cantillon in his general philosophy and in his analysis of social problems. He also believed that the ruin of France could be avoided by the restoration of the feudal regime. Unlike Cantillon, Dubuat-Nançay was a populationist. On agriculture, he was similar to the agrarians when he retained the providential natural order and the net productivity of the physiocrats. In this book he argues that the prosperity and happiness of states depends on a fair balance between tradition and change and advocates a thorough knowledge of the history of social and political organization, in order to know what to change and what to preserve. A fine example.
