Paul Henri Dietrich Baron d'Holbach & Nicolas Antoine Boulan - Lot 199
Paul Henri Dietrich Baron d'Holbach & Nicolas Antoine Boulanger, Dissertation on Elijah and Enoch. By the Author (Mr. Boulanger). A Research on the Origin of Oriental Despotism, and as a sequel to this Book. In the Eighteenth Century. Without place nor date [1764]. In-12 of XIV-216 pp., marbled havana calf, smooth decorated spine, red morocco titleplate, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition. The Author of the first two texts would be Nicolas Boulanger ; for the third text : Traité Mathématique sur le Bonheur by Irenée Krantzovius. Work translated from German into English with Remarks by A. B. And translated from English into French, with a preliminary letter by the Translator François. p.159-216., the B.N.F. gives as author Benjamin Stillingfleet and for the translator, Etienne de Silhouette. Everything leads us to believe that the role of Holbach and his friends was limited to editing the text, or even adapting it to the needs of the group. Like other works of the genre, the Dissertation circulated in manuscript form. The Marquise Du Châtelet, who died in 1749, had a copy in her papers. A folded painting. Fernand Caussy, Inventaire des manuscrits de la bibliothèque de Voltaire; Vercruysse, 1764/F1.
