Gabriel Bonnot de Mably, Entretiens de Phocion, on the relat - Lot 207
Gabriel Bonnot de Mably, Entretiens de Phocion, on the relationship of morality with politics; Translated from the Greek by Nicocles, with Remarks. By Abbot Mably. New Edition. Amsterdam, 1767. In-12 of XXXVI-248 pp., Havana calf, smooth spine decorated, red morocco title-piece, with jagged edges (contemporary binding). Third edition. The first edition was published in 1763. The work is one of the most important of Mably's works, the one in which he affirms and develops his political ideas. Deeply marked by the reading of the elders, whose work is supposedly translated, he maintains that politics must be subjected to reason, that the happiness of men is based on virtue and, finally, that the role of politics is to regulate morals. This treatise on morality contains the essence of Mably's theories, "the most important, after Morelly and Rousseau, of the moral socialists of the century" (Lichtenberger). INED, 2992. The false title and the guard sheet are glued together.
