Guillaume Marie André Ferrus, Des Aliénés. Considerations 1° - Lot 225
Guillaume Marie André Ferrus, Des Aliénés. Considerations 1° on the state of the houses intended for them both in France and in England, on the need to create new ones in France and on the mode of construction to be preferred for these houses; 2° on the hygienic and moral regime to which these patients must be subjected; 3° on some questions of forensic medicine or legislation relating to their civil status; By G. Ferrus, doctor of the hospice of Bicêtre, etc. Sold for the benefit of the Poor. Paris, by Madame Huzard, 1834. In-8 of (4)-319-(1) pp., half green basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt filets (contemporary binding). First edition. Appointed chief physician at Bicêtre in 1826, Guillaume Ferrus wanted to visit hospitals and asylums in France and England before taking up his duties. He recorded his observations in this memoir, which did not appear until 1834. In it he pointed out that there were far too few houses in the departments to receive the insane, and that the most serious drawbacks resulted from this insufficiency. The special establishments themselves do not seem to him to offer, from the point of view of treatment, all the desirable conveniences. 5 paintings and 2 folded plans composed and drawn by Philipon, lithographed by Walter and Muller. Freckles on the first two sheets. From the library of Charles Desnoyer, French economist (ex-libris). Semelaigne, Les Pionniers de la psychiatrie française, before and after Pinel, I,163.
