Alexandre Ferrier de Tourettes, Establishment of a commercia - Lot 230
Alexandre Ferrier de Tourettes, Establishment of a commercial and public telegraph. Paris, Imprimerie de Ve Thuau, 1830. In-8 paperback, cover of the period. First edition. Rare brochure on an attempt at private telegraphy in France. Alexandre Ferrier des Tourettes (b. 1810) developed a day and night optical telegraph and wanted to apply it to civil and commercial relations: "To apply to commercial and individual relations the telegraphic communications hitherto reserved for politics as a de facto monopoly; to employ this mode of correspondence perfected by day and night, such is the object of the enterprise. The ever-increasing developments in industry demand greater speed in communications, which in turn must produce more active consumption. In addition to business affairs there are a host of public and domestic events of great interest to families, such as a departure, an arrival, a birth, a marriage, a serious illness, a death, and a thousand other circumstances in which minutes are sometimes of great value. A company formed for this purpose established a first line from Paris to Rouen, but the telegraph, under the control of the Ministry of the Interior since April 1820, was an "element of power and order" declared Alphonse Foy, director of telegraphs (1831) to justify the refusal of a private line. Ferrier published another brochure in 1832: Etablissement de télégraphes publics de jour et de nuit, à Paris, which is the only one referenced at the BNF. 1 plate. Handwritten note of the time on the back of the last leaf.
