Science Museum, Weekly Illustrated Newspaper appearing on We - Lot 237
Science Museum, Weekly Illustrated Newspaper appearing on Wednesdays. Paris, 1856-1860. 4 vol. grand in-8 of (3)-416 pp. ; (4)-412 pp. ; (4)-412 pp. ; (4)-412 pp., demi chagrin rouge, spine decorated with nerves (contemporary binding). Head of the collection of this highly illustrated popular science journal. "The popularization of science contributes to a large extent to the success of several publishing houses such as Hachette, Larousse and Flammarion. The militancy of the first popular science publishers, anxious to do useful work and to spread education, was joined in the second half of the nineteenth century by a clear concern for profitability. Until the end of the century: after Cosmos, an encyclopaedic review of scientific progress and its application to the arts and industry, created in 1852 by a clergyman, Father Moigno, came out L'Ami des sciences founded in 1855 by Victor Meunier, then La Science pour tous created in 1856 by H. Le Couturier, who at the same time launched Le Musée des sciences. A total of 15 journals were published in Paris in 1865, with extremely variable lifespans" (B. Bensaude-Vincent, Un public pour la science : l'essor de la vulgarisation au XIXe siècle). Collaborators: Belly, Lecouturier, Platt, etc. Good copy.
