Small in-4 of LXIII-492-(2) pp., ivory vellum, smooth spine, title in gilt letters on the spine (contemporary binding). Second revised and enlarged edition. Precious document for the history of the relations between Europe and India at the birth of the Enlightenment. Father Lucino defended the decree promulgated by the Cardinal of Tournon in 1704; Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710) went to India and China on the orders of Clement XI, to put an end to the old rites (Malabar rite) whose practice the Jesuits had authorised for new converts. Convinced that it was dangerous to tolerate these remnants of superstition any longer, he outlawed them. Despite the confirmation of this decree by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727, the polemic raged until 1744. An important table of the religions and rites of India; the considerable alphabetical table of contents makes it very easy to consult. Title printed in red and black. Four engraved plates, one of which is a leaflet and two coloured plates: Figura di Pulleyar esposa da Abramo Roger, Disegno Della Chies Comma separation de Nobili Da' Paaeas, E Della Casa Del Missionario, Elevazione, Spaccato, Planta; the two coloured plates give the description of the signs worn by the Indians on the forehead and the signs authorised by the missionaries. Trace of stamp on the title page. Cordier, Indosinica I, 918-19.
