Christoph Hermann von Manstein, Historical, Political and Mi - Lot 260
Christoph Hermann von Manstein, Historical, Political and Military Memoirs on Russia from 1727 to 1744, by General de Manstein. New edition, collated on the original manuscript corrected by Voltaire's hand. Paris, A. Franck, 1860. 2 vol. petit in-12 of (4)-VIII-(5)304 pp. ; (2)-394 pp., Havana half-basane, spine decorated with nerves, gilt head, untrimmed, printed cover preserved (contemporary binding). New edition published in the collection Bibliothèque russe, Nouvelle série. The first French edition appeared in 1771, one year after the German original. These memoirs contain an accurate picture of the political revolutions of the Russian court, and of the military operations of this empire from the death of Catherine to the beginning of Elizabeth's reign, i.e. from 1727 to 1744, and the author only recounts events that he witnessed, or of which he had perfect knowledge. He has added a supplement in which he goes back to tsarist times, extending especially on Peter I, and ends with considerations of great interest on the greatness of Russia. Preceded in the author's life by Michel Huber. Trace of wetness on the last ten leaves of volume II. From the library of Count Godefroy de Montgrand with his coat of arms on the plates, his ex-libris and an ex dono manuscript of Prince Augustin Galitzin: To Count G. de Montgrand very grateful homage. Nice copy.
