William Penn, Stitch of the Cross, Crown Stitch: or Treatise - Lot 288
William Penn, Stitch of the Cross, Crown Stitch: or Treatise on the Nature & Discipline of the Holy Cross of Christ: Which shows that to Renounce oneself, & to burden oneself day by day with one's Cross, is the only way to reach the Kingdom of God. No place, 1746. In-8 of XIII-293-(1) pp., brown calf (English binding at the time). First edition in French. Translation by Claude Gay, a Frenchman of Catholic origin who became a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in England in 1741. The original English edition was published in 1669. "While Britain had just been wavering between royalty and republic in the mid-seventeenth century, William Penn testified to Quakers' interest in inner and spiritual royalty, overcoming the continuing quarrel between Republicans and Royalists. In the eyes of the future founder of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia, the King is the one who crucifies his selfishness and rules over his inner world. Since every human being is called to inner royalty, the beheading of a King can only be considered as a caricature of the beheading of the old Adam, in order to give birth to the New Adam. This is the revelation that was imposed on William Penn and gave him the foundations of the New Spiritual World that he wanted to create in the New Geographical World" (Jacques Thual). Restored binding.
