Philippe Bosquier, Le Fouët de l'Académie des Pecheurs, bastie sur la famine du Prodigue Evangelic, By V.P.F. Philippes Bosquier Montois, of the Order of St. Francis in the Province of Flanders. Dedicated to my Illustrious & Reverend Lord Ian Sarazin, Archbishop, & Duke of Cambray, &c. To Arras, From the printing house of Guillaume de la Riviere, 1597. Petit in-8 of (16)-354-(6) pp., havana calf, smooth spine decorated, blue calf titleplate, gilt fillet on the cuts, speckled edges (late 18th century binding). Second edition printed in Arras by the Académie des Pecheurs, first published in Mons in 1596. Philippe Bosquier (1562-1636), a native of Mons, preacher of the Order of Saint Francis, is the author of theological works, but also a playwright engaged in the fight against "the worldly and the Huguenois". Brunet: "The various works of Brother Bosquier prove that in order to provoke the hilarity of his readers or listeners, he was not afraid to use the lowest and most burlesque comedy". Two woodcuts engraved on the front and one on the back of the title: we see the prodigal son under trees, kneeling; a few shreds of clothing cannot cover his apparent sex, next to him three pigs are taking food. Very good copy, trimmed a little short. Handwritten note from the end of the 18th century: "rare". Héricourt and Caron, Recherches sur les livres imprimés à Arras, p.44; Brunet I, 1126.
