Red book. Collection of ten rare pieces. 1790. In-8, blue half-basane, decorated smooth spine (19th century binding). Rare documents on the royal pensions scandal at the dawn of the Revolution. Under the Ancien Régime the name pension applied indiscriminately to all the pardons distributed by the sovereign. The name was confused with the modest reward of the officer or the obscure servant, a host of concessions obtained under all pretexts, the number of which had grown from reign to reign. The pensions granted by the king were recorded in the 18th century, in a register called the Red Book, which was published on April 1, 1790 and produced the greatest sensation by revealing the scandalous squandering of part of the public fortune.
