Pierre Jurieu, The Vows of a Patriot. In Amsterdam, 1788. In-8 of XVI-282 pp. ANTRAIGUES (Emmanuel-Louis-Henri de Launay, comte d')]. Brief on the States General, their rights, and the manner of convening them. No place, 1788. In-8 of 279 pp., blond half-basane, smooth decorated spine (binding of the time). Set 1 vol. in-8, havana calf, gilt fillets on covers, spine decorated with nerves, red morocco titlepapers, jagged edges, epiderminated covers (contemporary binding). 1. New edition of this famous pamphlet by the pastor and virulent polemist Pierre Jurieu (1637-1713), whose first edition was delivered in Amsterdam in 1689 and remained in print for more than a year, under the title Les Soupirs de la France esclave qui aspire après la liberté. Of the fifteen memoirs of which the first edition consists, only the first thirteen have been reprinted here. The work is a lively criticism of the government of Louis XIV: the author forcefully proclaims the principle of the sovereignty of the people and the subordination of kings to the States-General. 2. Original edition. At the end of 1788, the Count of Antraigues (1755-1812) published this Mémoire sur les Etats-Généraux in which he vigorously defended the rights of the people against the monarchy, and represented the hereditary nobility as "the most disastrous present that the irritated sky has done to the human race". This publication participated strongly in the revolutionary movement; the author was elected deputy to the States-General before becoming a fierce defender of absolutism; he founded one of the most important spy services of the Bourbons. Martin & Walter I, 428; unknown at Tourneux. Quérard II, 442.
