Louis de Potter, Rational Dictionary of the Words Most Used - Lot 330
Louis de Potter, Rational Dictionary of the Words Most Used in Science, Philosophy, Politics, Morals and Religion with their Defined Meanings and their Relation to Social Issues. Brussels and Leipzig, Auguste Schnée, 1859. In-8 of 348-(2) pp, half calf fawn, spine ornamented with nerves, title coin in violin morocco (binding of the time). New edition of the A, B, C of Social Science, the first under this title "but completely reworked and more than quintupled by the additions made to almost all the old articles and by the addition of nearly six hundred entirely new articles; which brings the number of words defined and commented on to about thirteen hundred", according to the Opinion of the author placed at the head of the work. Louis de Potter published in 1848 a work entitled La Réalité déterminée par le raisonnement... at the end of which is an alphabetical list of the principal words used in this opuscule with their values, drawn apart that same year under the title A, B, C de la science sociale. Dictionary of social science established by Louis de Potter, Belgian historian (1786-1859), rationalist critic of Christianity who, from 1840 onwards, became the propagator of "rational socialism". In 1830, for six weeks, he was the head of the provisional government of the new Belgian state, which he would have liked to be republican and democratic. His son Agathon (1827-1906), a medical doctor, collaborated on this dictionary and continued his father's theoretical work. Very nice copy.
