Antoine Manassés de Pas Marquis de Feuquieres, Marquis de). Memoirs of M. le Marquis de Feuquiere, Lieutenant General of the King's Armies; containing his Maxims on War, & the Application of the Examples to the Maxims. New Edition, Revised & corrected on the Original; increased by several considerable additions; together with a Life of the Author given by M. Comte de Feuquière his brother, & enriched with Plans & Maps. In-4 of (4)-LIV-(2)-358-(8) pp. in London, by Pierre Dunoyer, 1740, blond calf, spine decorated with nerves, green morocco titleplate, triple gilt fillet framing on covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition based on the manuscript communicated by the Count de Feuquières, brother of the author, to Charles-Hugues Le Fèvre de Saint-Marc. It is preceded by a Disclaimer by Abbé Le Mascriet who criticizes at length the previous editions and the Life of the Marquis de Feuquières by Gilles Le Moivre. An edition in-12 appeared simultaneously. Lieutenant-General in 1693, the Marquis de Feuquières wrote his memoirs "for the instruction of his sons, whom he intended for military life. But these are not memoirs strictly speaking: they are a work of military technique, in which the author reviews everything that a good officer should know and offers many reflections from his experience of war. He does not stick to pure theory: he chooses examples of sieges, battles, marches, etc., to prove the usefulness of his reflections and thus makes, often with great detail, the history of the main military events that occurred in the second half of the seventeenth century". Vignette engraved on the title and 12 maps and plans engraved out of text, ten of which are folded. The plan of the Battle of Nerwinde is announced twice by mistake in the Notice to the bookbinder. Handwritten ex-libris on the title. A cap and worn corners. Bourgeois and André II, 856: "The best".
