Antoine Ferrand, The Spirit of History, or Political and Mor - Lot 355
Antoine Ferrand, The Spirit of History, or Political and Moral Letters from Father to Son, on how to study History in general, and particularly the History of France. A Paris, chez Deterville, 1809. 4 volumes in-8 of (4)-XII-478-(Z) pp.; (4)-512 pp.; (4)-528 pp.; (4)-547-(1) pp, green half-marocco, smooth spine with double gilt fillet emphasizing the false nerves, plates of green morocco paper with gilt fillet, yellow edges (contemporary binding). Fifth Edition, revised, corrected and enlarged by the Author with an analytical and reasoned table of contents. This book began in the emigration for the instruction of an only son, whom M. de Ferrand lost in Regensburg, was welcomed with favour by the spirit of reaction to the Revolution, which was driving public opinion and which Napoleon's government was moreover quite openly favouring. The Spirit of History is from one end to the other a systematic plea for power against freedom. Quérard III, 110. From the library of Prince Maurice Dietrichstein, tutor of the Eaglet. Unsigned copy.
