Letters from Junius, translated from the English. A Paris, G - Lot 365
Letters from Junius, translated from the English. A Paris, Gueffier, Volland, 1791. 2 parts in one vol. in-8 of XXIII-210 pp.; (2)-295 pp., half havana half-basan with small vellum corners, smooth spine decorated, red morocco title-piece (binding of the time). First French edition of this famous pamphleteer collection, a masterpiece of English literature. "Junius, pseudonym of the unknown author of the political letters published in London, in the Public Advertiser (1769-1772) whose vehemence has remained famous. They were directed against Lord North's ministry. These pamphlets were attributed in turn to various characters, Ph. Francis, P. Sackville, Burke, Hamilton, etc., without the question ever being resolved. For three years, the invisible vigilante struck relentlessly, without mercy, at all the crimes and abuses that came to expose themselves to his blows, from the simple bail granted to a thief caught in flagrante delicto, to the solemn acts of the ministry of Lord North, whose political imperialism decided the political loss of the great American colony; one received the punishment, and sought in vain around one's self the executor of these vengeances. ... It may be said that the true doctrine of freedom of the press, as it is professed and practiced in England, and as all firm minds still conceive it in France, dates from this time" (Larousse). Good copy despite a small marginal restoration on the first leaves of the second part.
