Jean-Henri Maubert de Gouvest, The Pure Truth. Letters and M - Lot 367
Jean-Henri Maubert de Gouvest, The Pure Truth. Letters and Memoirs on the Duke and Duchy of Virtemberg. To serve to fix public opinion on the trial between the Prince and his subjects. By the Baroness Baroness Douairiére de W. A Augsbourg, 1765. In-12 of 228 pp., paperback of the time. First edition. Ex-Capuchin, Maubert de Gouvest (1721-1767) is less known for his works than for the singularity of his adventures, which make his life a kind of novel. Often thrown in prison, he composed this work during his last captivity in Holland; after recovering his freedom, he intended to go to Germany and find protection there, he defended Duke Vitenmberg accused of having light morals. Brunet III, 1111.
