(Artois) Brief on the generality of Artois. No place nor dat - Lot 453
(Artois) Brief on the generality of Artois. No place nor date [1680]. In-4 of (209) ff, covered with medium and very legible handwriting (about 15 lines per page), brown basane, spine ribbed, cloisonné and floral spine, red edges (contemporary binding). Interesting anonymous manuscript on the Artois. The mention of the Duc d'Elboeuf as governor general of the province in charge (f. 114) gives an indication if we assume that it is Charles III of Guise-Lorraine (1620-1692), who had this office in survival in 1662 (several dates after 1662 cited in the text exclude his father). After a general introduction that mixes history, geography and topography, the subjects follow one another with a section on a particular theme: thus we have : - f. 26 Ecclesiastical Chamber / - f. 29v Chamber of the Third Party (for the Provincial States); - f. 44 Estate; - f. 45v Provincial Council; - f. 49 Governance of Arras; - f. 65 Counties / f. 77 Baronies; - f. 84 Noble families, their names and their lands; - f. 114 Military government; - f. 115 Ecclesiastical state (by far the most structured and detailed part); - f. 154v to f. 178 Governance of Arras: names of the communities (with a population estimate opposite). No manuscript among those cited by Saffroy for this province corresponds to this manuscript. Leather missing from both headdresses, rubbed hinges. Copy from the library of the Earl of Chambord, sold at Maggs in London.
