VERY RARE SENOUFO HELMET (Ivory Coast) with big horns surmou - Lot 196
VERY RARE SENOUFO HELMET (Ivory Coast) with big horns surmounted by an antelope. Bronze. Beautiful patina of excavation. H.20 Diam.21. In French collection since the 1970s. According to Moussa Kourouma, they would be war helmets of the pre-colonial period, an opinion confirmed by Father Knops who cites among the bronze objects "helmets of combat" in his work "Les anciens Sénoufo" (1923-1935). In an article "À central Ivory Coast Helmet", Philip L Ravenhill studies a copy belonging to the Abidjan museum. Another copy of the same type can be found in the Dakar Museum, as well as in the L. van de Velde collection in Antwerp (according to André Blandin, who reproduces it on page 75 in his book "Afrique de l'Ouest / Bronzes et autres alliages". (1988). Exhibition: "D'hier et d'aujourd'hui, la folle esthétique de l'Afrique" musée d'histoire de la médecine, Paris, 2017/2018.
