Provenance: Collection of the Duc de Maillé, Chateauneuf-sur-Cher. Reader and organizer of Philippe d'Orléans' parties, Carmontelle was a writer, painter, architect. He specialized in writing "proverbs" or light comedies, which he illustrated with "transparencies", a genre he helped to create. He became famous for the many small portraits he made of his contemporaries, becoming the illustrator of the last years of the Ancien Régime. Born in Santo Domingo in 1751, Marquis René Eustache d'Osmond was appointed ambassador and minister plenipotentiary in The Hague in 1788. In 1819, he resigned from his post, and from then on he only sat in the peer chamber until his death in 1838. He was the father of Madame de Boigne, the famous memorialist. Expert: Mr René MILLET.
