17th century FRENCH SCHOOL, workshop of Simon VOUET. The Virgin with her diaper. Walnut panel, one board, not parqueted. 52 x 38 cm. Without frame. Reprise of a painting by Vouet known by the engraving of Pierre Daret (see J. Thuillier, Le catalogue de l'exposition Vouet, Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1990 - 1991, reproduced p. 94). The Virgin and Child was a very fashionable theme in the 17th century, particularly prized by Simon Vouet, who produced a large number of small paintings for private customers from the 1630s onwards. Few paintings have been found, and in most of these works, the workshop's participation is important. Twelve engravings were made, seven of them during the artist's lifetime.
