Antoine De Pas Marquis de Feuquière, mémoires de M. Le Marqu - Lot 114
Antoine De Pas Marquis de Feuquière, mémoires de M. Le Marquis de Feuquière, lieutenant general of the King's armies ; contenans ses maximes sur la guerre & l'application des exemples aux maximes, nouvelle édition, Londres, Chez Pierre Dunoyer, P., Chez Rollin, 1740, 4 vols, in-12, of CCVIII-226pp, 402pp, 387pp, 444pp, 13 folded maps, full contemporary calf, spines decorated, red morocco title and giblets, red edges, some rubbing. First edition established on the manuscript communicated by the count of Feuquières, brother of the author, by Charles-Hugues Le Fèvre de Saint-Marc. It is preceded by an Avertissement by the Abbé Le Mascriet who criticizes at length the previous editions and by the Vie du Marquis de Feuquières by Gilles Le Moivre. An edition in-4 appeared simultaneously. Lieutenant-General in 1693, the Marquis de Feuquières wrote his memoirs "for the instruction of his sons, whom he intended for military life. But these are not memoirs in the strict sense of the word: they are a work of military technique, in which the author reviews everything a good officer should know and makes many reflections based on his experience of war. He does not confine himself to pure theory: he chooses examples of sieges, battles, marches, etc., to prove the usefulness of his reflections and thus makes, often with great detail, the history of the main military events that occurred in the second half of the 17th century.
