VERY RARE REPRESENTATION OF LAN CAIHE riding a crane in wood - Lot 326
VERY RARE REPRESENTATION OF LAN CAIHE riding a crane in wood with remains of polychromy. In the Taoist religion, the crane (or heron) is a symbol of longevity and superhuman wisdom. It is the steed of the Immortals and more particularly the emblem of one of them, Lan Caihe, whose sex is undetermined. The red color on the head of the bird (which can still be seen on the statue) is related to the cinnabar that is used in the composition of potions of immortality. In this respect, Lan Caihe can be considered as the equivalent of our alchemists always in search of eternal youth. In this representation, the deity is holding the bottle containing the precious elixir. China 18th century. H.56.
