RUSSIA XIX. "Dormition of the Virgin". Painting on wood. H.5 - Lot 9
RUSSIA XIX. "Dormition of the Virgin". Painting on wood. H.54 L67. The term dormition evokes a peaceful death such as falling asleep, which is the case for the Virgin. To assist in this, the apostles on a mission of evangelization in the world are miraculously brought by the angels. At the moment of Mary's falling asleep, her soul leaves her body. At that moment, Christ appears. He takes Mary's soul, represented by a baby, in his arms as a sign of purity and carries it to the Kingdom of God. At the end of the 6th century, the Eastern Roman Emperor Maurice decided to celebrate the feast of the Dormition on August 15. The Orthodox Church insists on the sweetness of Mary's death, while the Catholic Church prefers to remember the Assumption of the Virgin, which it celebrates on the same date.
