SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST in limestone. He is considered as the - Lot 9
SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST in limestone. He is considered as the last of the Prophets. Announcing the coming of the Messiah, he precedes him; this is why he is called the Precursor. Here, inscribed in a medallion, he points to a lamb, referring to the image of Jesus walking before him: "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). The lamb, in the Middle Ages, is one of the most important Christian symbols, recalling both the sacrifice of the Savior and his redemptive work, as evidenced by the famous Mystic Lamb of the Van Eyck brothers, kept in Ghent. France XIV-XV. H.70 W.22 D.12. John the Baptist is the only saint whose nativity is celebrated, like Christ or the Virgin.
