SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA. Limestone France. Ep.end of t - Lot 11
SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA. Limestone France. Ep.end of the XVth. H.80 L.46 P.23. Catherine, from a noble family in Alexandria, refused to marry the Emperor in person, because of her "mystical marriage" with Christ. Maximilian confronted her with 50 philosophers to demonstrate the inanity of the Christian faith. They failed, were executed and Catherine was condemned to be torn apart by a wheel bristling with sharp points. The wheel miraculously breaks and she is saved before being beheaded. This is why she has a wheel or a sword as an attribute. She can also, as here, trample on the image of Maximilian, ultimately overcome by the power of faith. From the 9th century onwards, Catherine was the object of immense veneration and became the patron saint of young girls as well as of clerics and cartwrights.
