FRENCH SCHOOL end of 18th century, beginning of 19th century - Lot 95
FRENCH SCHOOL end of 18th century, beginning of 19th century. "Gallant couple with a fruit basket, accompanied by a monkey and a parrot". Oil on canvas, old frame. 36x31 With frame 46x41.
The painting is very interesting by the presence of the monkey and the parrot. These two animals evoke the taste of the time for exoticism; but more than that, they take on a particular meaning at the end of the 18th century. The monkey, rid of its burlesque character or its allegorical meaning of the previous centuries, expresses the trouble (including erotic) in the characters with whom it is represented. As for the parrot, it remains the symbol of purity. A dichotomous language, present in filigree in the painting, oscillating between the desire of the man and the innocence of the woman. As for the grape, widely represented here, it is associated with youth, vitality and fertility, as if to underline the qualities of the couple represented.
