BIG VIRGIN WITH THE CHILD. Wooden subject with remains of po - Lot 198
BIG VIRGIN WITH THE CHILD. Wooden subject with remains of polychromy. Bohemia or Germany. Early work based on the Virgin and Child in limestone, made before 1393 and kept in the parish church of Altenmarkt. Wide drapes with flowing folds accompany the graceful silhouette of the Madonna with her pronounced hip, her forms spread out in space and free from a strict frontality. The child is presented to the faithful in a mobile and unstable posture that offers a counterpoint to that of the Virgin. Unquestionably, the Prague workshops, specialized in the sculpture of this type of Virgin, played an eminent role in the birth of the famous German "schönes madonnen" at the end of the Gothic period (cf. Catalogue of the Louvre Museum's exhibition "German Sculptures of the Late Middle Ages" in 1991). H.82.
