PAIR OF STATUETTES in bronze after the Antique period. The t - Lot 120
PAIR OF STATUETTES in bronze after the Antique period. The two statuettes that make up this elegant pair of bronzes find their source in prestigious antique models. The first depicts the nude Venus untying the sandal from her left foot with her right hand before entering the bath. This famous composition derives from Roman models dating from the 1st century A.D., of which the Pompeii Museum and the Louvre hold a few examples (Louvre, inv. BR4417). The second statuette is a reinterpretation of the famous Wounded Amazon, an antique marble preserved in the Vatican's Pio Clementino Museum, of which a bronze cast made in 1780 is now in the Louvre, and attributed to Luigi Valadier. (Venus' right hand missing). Bronzes on marble pedestals and marble veneer. Italy, late 18th century. H.36 L.9.
