RARE AND SUPERB PORTER CHAIR (palanquin). It features a cere - Lot 238
RARE AND SUPERB PORTER CHAIR (palanquin). It features a ceremonial scene with four naked servants carrying their lord seated in a palanquin. This lord is seated, wearing a large poncho, a crossed turban and numerous ear ornaments. It is interesting to note the resemblance of his turban to that of the servants, this harmony of dress indicating the cohesion of the clan around a style of dress, differentiated from the other clans of this western Mexican civilization. The concentrated, hieratic face of this young lord personifies the sacredness of this important moment in the magical-religious life of the community. Beige, salmon and orange terracotta, one of the bearers' heads broken and glued, slightly broken and glued in three places. Very good overall condition. Colima, western Mexico, 100 B.C. to 250 A.D. 19.5x19.5x12.5cm. Provenance: former Arkansas Usa collection, assembled between the 1950s and 1960s. Exhibited at the Marjorie Barrick Museum, UNLV in 1990 and 2004.
