(Esclavagisme) William Beach Lawrence, l'industrie française - Lot 364
A copy enriched at the head with proofs of the booklet, with handwritten corrections, and at the end with the English edition, also printed by Dentu. In this pamphlet, the author castigates the French press for its coverage of the Harper's Ferry bombing. "Slavery here is a question of humanity, not politics. This attack, it cannot be forgotten, was a conspiracy of fanatical abolitionists from the North, who did not even have any racial ties with Negroes, and whose aim was to instigate a servile war against their compatriots and brothers from the South, a servile war whose success, independently of other infinitely more regrettable results, could only have led to the annihilation of the agricultural industry of our slave states, and especially the cultivation of cotton."
