Walnut STATUE representing Saint Florian. Eastern France or - Lot 159
Walnut STATUE representing Saint Florian. Eastern France or Germany circa 1820-30. Tradition has it that, as a Roman soldier, he saved a village from fire by praying and symbolically seeing himself thrown a bucket of water to extinguish it. This is why he is associated with the fireman and all those who protect against fire. Discovered for his Christian faith, he was drowned in the River Enns. As a saint and martyr, he is celebrated on May 4 by both Catholics and Orthodox.H.66.
