ICON of the Virgin of Pity with Christ at the Tomb. Tempera - Lot 145
ICON of the Virgin of Pity with Christ at the Tomb. Tempera on wood panel, gilded background. Russia 18th-19th century. 23x17 AC 34x28 Very beautiful Russian icon depicting the Mother of God of Pity (or "Virgin of the Passion") reclining over Christ at the tomb. The Virgin, dressed in a red maphorion richly decorated with pearls and stylized stars, expresses great spiritual and compassionate intensity. The scene of Christ lying in the shroud completes the liturgical and meditative dimension of the work.
