ICON of the Virgin and Child (Eleousa type). Egg tempera and - Lot 150
ICON of the Virgin and Child (Eleousa type). Egg tempera and gold highlights on wood panel. 44.5×32. Greece, 19th century. Beautiful icon of the Mother of God of Tenderness (Eleousa), depicting the Virgin inclining her face towards the Child Jesus, who touches his mother's face with a delicate gesture. The Child, dressed in a light-colored tunic and pinkish himation, holds a scroll inscribed in Greek. The gilded background, richly decorated with incised motifs, lends a strong spiritual and liturgical intensity to the whole.
