Carved oak SUBJECT representing Saint Catherine. 19th centur - Lot 155
Carved oak SUBJECT representing Saint Catherine. 19th century in the Flemish tradition of the early 16th century. H.51. Beautiful oak statue depicting Saint Catherine, standing, wearing a long draped cloak, holding an open book symbolizing wisdom and trampling a kneeling figure (the Emperor Maxentius, her persecutor). The treatment of the folds, the delicacy of the face and the hieratic elegance are directly inspired by Flemish Gothic and Renaissance sculptures from around 1500.
