Joannes Scapula, Lexicon Graecolatinum recens constructum. I - Lot 429
Joannes Scapula, Lexicon Graecolatinum recens constructum. Large in-8 of (16)-824-376-(106) pp., brown calf, smooth decorated spine, red morocco titleplate (18th century binding). Second edition of Joannes Scapula's Greek lexicon, which was first published in 1580. Joannes Scapula, born in Germany in the second half of the sixteenth century, was a proofreader in Henri Estienne's printing house, and following the example of his master, is also counted among the Greek lexicographers. The Lexicon graecolatinum, a compilation of Henri Estienne's Thesaurus graecae linguae published in 1572, led to his being accused of plagiarism. According to Renouard (I, 139), "Scapula's shortened compilation had the fortune of many abstracts: much cheaper, and seemingly easier to use, it was sold and reprinted while the Thesaurus remained in its author's store. "The result was considerable damage to the author, while Scapula made science more accessible through the cheapness of the book. Nice copy. Adams, 610 (for the first edition).
