Charles François Tiphaigne de la Roche, Amilec, or the seed - Lot 336
Charles François Tiphaigne de la Roche, Amilec, or the seed of men. No place, 1753. Petit in-12 of XI-(1)-174 pp., havana basane, spine decorated with nerves (contemporary binding). First edition of the author's first novel. "The work is a fantastic dream of anti-materialist inspiration. L'Avertissement aux Savants is not devoid of humour. The author talks about his vain efforts to achieve knowledge through research and calculation. He is happy to announce that he has now found the path that leads to science: sleep. "What did I not know earlier, that in order to make systems and discoveries, it was only a matter of dreaming philosophically! But all is not yet lost; I am young and have plenty of time to sleep. Amilec, the genius who presides over the multiplication of the human species or the great master of the manufacture of men, serves to mock the new theories on generation. The description of the election of kings over which Amilec presides leads to the praise of the Bourbon family: "Let us give back to the French this precious germ, may their wishes be fulfilled, may a Duke of Burgundy be born". Hartig & Soboul, p. 54. Good copy.
