Savornin, Sentimens d'un Homme de Guerre on the new system o - Lot 347
Savornin, Sentimens d'un Homme de Guerre on the new system of the Chevalier de Folard; in relation to the Column & the Mixing of the different Weapons of an Army. With a Dissertation on Caesar's & Pompey's Order of Battle on Pharsal's Day. By Mr. D***. In Paris, Chez Briasson, 1733. In-4 of (14)-167-(1) pp., blond calf, spine decorated with nerves, red edges (contemporary binding). "The most discussed military writer of the first half of the 18th century was undoubtedly the knight Jean-Charles de Folard (1669-1752). His fame was truly European. For Folard, the column was made up of one to six battalions, each with its own tail. The front had to oscillate between twenty-four and thirty lines in open terrain. The column had to rely more on shock than on fire. It had to approach the enemy with knives, which is more suited to the French nation than to any other," Folard believes. Ex-libris of the Marquis de Vaulchier. Nice copy.
